Backyard Benches
small text
large text

These multilevel benches add much needed seating to any backyard space. Whether you need 10 benches or just one, this project will help you build elegant, yet simple, benches in just a few easy steps.

You'll need the following materials:
1x2 boards
2x4 boards
4x4 logs
nails

1) Figure out the dimensions you want your new bench to be.

2) Cut your 2x4s to the corresponding lengths. If you wish, you may cut a 45-degree angle at the end of each board for the joints, otherwise you can use butt joints when the time comes to assemble the frame.

3) Decide the orientation of your slats. Measure the distance and cut your 1x2s.

4) Decide the height of your bench and cut your 4x4s.

5) At the top of your 4x4s notch out a 2-inch-deep by 4-inch-tall groove for your 2x4 frame.

6) Take the two end pieces of the frame that your slats will butt up against. Measure the width of your slats and nail a 1x2 board to the inward-facing side. This board should be set a distance the width of your slats down from the top of the 2x4 so that your slats will lie flush with the top. This will serve as the ledge that your slats will lie on. A good rule is about one nail to every foot.

7) Figure out the spacing of your slats and mark them on the boards. Don't forget the ends of the board will be the joint.

8) Assemble the frame, using at least two nails at every joint.

9) Lay your slats into the frame and nail them in through the ledge.

10) Attach the legs. Your bench is complete.
